St Valentine was a priest in Rome in the AD two hundreds during the time of Claudius II. Stories vary a little, but apparently Christian marriage was not recognised at this time but St Valentine continued to marry Christian couples. As a result, he was thrown in jail. The ‘letters’ he sent were not “love letters” but letters of encouragement to his parishioners while he was in jail. The jailer’s daughter helped him by delivering the letters. The jailer and Valentine got on well with the jailer but lines were crossed when Valentine tried to convert the jailer (some stories say several members of the jailers family did convert and that Valentine had cured the daughter of blindness). Valentine was beaten and stoned. When this did not killed him, he was beheaded around AD269.

So perhaps this Valentines Day you might like to concentrate on sending out notes to folk you love and care for that encourages them in the things the are doing. Less of the romantic stuff and more of the building up stuff. ♥♥
