Every ceremony has it’s own specialness. From the very simplest of ceremonies, with little more than vows and paperwork, right through to those with several elements included, they are each unique. Such a special event to be a part of bringing together, ensuring couples are legally wed at the end but have ‘just what they wanted’ for their day.
I recently had the privilege to officiate at the wedding of the son of one of best friends. I have known Daniel since he was just little guy and seen his deep committment to friends and family. It was a delight to meet Melissa and her two daughters and discover something of how these four have developed into a strong family unit.
As we talked together there was no shortage of ideas. The resulting ceremony was very special and rich in ceremony.
Although much of the this ceremony fitted with a traditional wedding, right from the start elements of difference emerged. As the guests arrived, the groom greeted them and gave them each a small organza bag of pebbles (the use to be revealed later). The bestman and groomsman left the groom with me and went down to welcome the bride and her girls. They then became the first to walk up the isle, followed by the two flowergirls (the brides daughters) and then the bride with her Mum.
During the ceremony, we had a beautiful song shared as well as two readings, all presented by the brides daughters. The couple had written their own vows which reflected a small part of their journey together.
As the registry was being signed two lovely keepsakes were being created by the guests. First off, those pebbles received earlier, were a representation of the influences friends and family had already made in the lives of the bride and groom, plus a representation of commitment to support and encourage them both going forward. Together everyone filled a vessle with their pebbles, which was then sealed. Secondly, a picture frame was signed by everyone present and this will hold their chosen picture from those taken by Pure Love Photographers. Two lovely, special keepsakes of the day.
Another special element before we broke for photos was Daniel presenting a necklace each to his two, now, step-daughters, Abigail & Claudia. He lovingly spoke of his love and committment to them both.
Then, Mr & Mrs South exited with bubbles being blown around them (just another lovely touch). After some photos we then cut the cake. As we gathered at the reception bubbles again abounded, both from my little machine and from the glasses. The couple were toasted and a lovely relaxed time followed.
Because of the long standing connection to this family, it was an added treat that both myself and my husband were included on the guest list. An extra special treat to be able to be there from start to finish. Thank you both, Daniel & Melissa, for inviting me to be your celebrant. I look forward to more times with you and your family and to see you all continue to grow together. Blessings to all four.
