Isn’t it neat to have an extra day off – for those of us who don’t work public holidays anyway.
Queen Elizabeth II has her actual birthday on 21 April, born in 1926. I think she is quite remarkable, as she continues with her royal duties so diligently at 91.
Apparently the tradition of celebrating the royal birthday on a day other than the actual birthday began back in 1748 by the then King George II. King George’s birthday, 30th October 1683, was in the English winter – not a pleasant time of year of a birthday parade. King George decided to combine his birthday celebration with the ‘Trooping the Colour Military Parade’ which took place each spring. The tradition has stood for Kings & Queens since then.
As we enjoy the benefit of an extra day off (or time & a half pay), let’s take a cue from George II that we don’t necessarily have to celebrate occasions on the ‘actual day’ but it is really neat to celebrate.
Life’s events are worth celebrating
